TextSnag Privacy Policy

Effective October 11, 2026.

TextSnag is provided by Wave Labs LLC. Contact: contact@textsnag.app.

Core recognition stays on your Mac

TextSnag recognizes text locally. Screen access lets you select an area for recognition. The latest source image and review revisions are held in memory temporarily, normally up to five minutes, and cleared on replacement, clearing, quitting or locking. Copying places text on the macOS clipboard; other apps and system clipboard features may then access it.

The app does not automatically send captures to the developer or to an AI provider. Optional sharing is described below.

Local storage and your controls

Settings are stored on your Mac. Capture history is off by default; if enabled, it stores recognized text locally (100 entries by default, configurable from 1 to 10,000). History thumbnails are a separate opt-in. You can delete history, turn history off, or turn thumbnails off in Settings. Pending deletions or storage errors are reported by the app. Saved history is separate from the temporary review source.

Optional provider API keys are stored in the Mac's Keychain. Downloaded recognition-language files remain on your Mac until removed. App Store entitlement records are stored locally to evaluate access and restoration.

Optional AI and provider requests

AI features are off by default. With Anthropic or OpenAI, TextSnag uses your own API key to send the recognized text and instructions you choose to enhance to that provider. Text-only enhancement does not upload a screenshot.

Image re-reading has a separate setting. Each request asks you to confirm the provider, model and image size. After confirmation, TextSnag sends only the selected source crop as a metadata-stripped PNG, at most 20 megapixels and 4 MiB. It does not include the unselected screen area or saved history thumbnails. The result is available for you to review and explicitly copy.

Loading cloud model lists also sends an authenticated request to the chosen provider, without capture content. Cloud requests expose ordinary connection information such as your IP address. Providers receive content under your account and may retain it under their terms. TextSnag's local cache settings do not guarantee zero retention by a provider. Provider charges may apply.

Apple Intelligence text enhancement runs on-device on supported Macs. Ollama connections are restricted to the local Mac. You can leave AI disabled and use core local recognition.

After Copying actions

If you configure an After Copying Shortcut or custom URL, copied text is passed to that destination. A website, app or Shortcut can process or transmit it according to its own behavior. Text included in a URL may also appear in browser history or destination logs. Review your configured action and disable it when you do not want copied text shared.

Language downloads and purchases

When you download an extra recognition language, GitHub receives a file request and ordinary network information such as your IP address. No captured text or image is included in that request.

The Mac App Store edition uses Apple StoreKit for purchases and restoration. Apple handles payment and account information under its own privacy policy. TextSnag receives verified transaction information needed to determine trial or purchased access. Payment card information is not entered into TextSnag.

Direct sales are not open. This policy describes the Mac App Store edition; direct licensing and payment details will be published before direct sales become available.

Support and website

If you email support, Wave Labs LLC and its email service receive your email address, message and any attachments you choose to send. Do not send passwords, API keys or private screenshots. You can contact us about your support information or request deletion; we will respond to the request and any applicable retention requirements.

The app includes no advertising, tracking or analytics service. This website has no analytics script or contact form. Hosting and network providers necessarily receive connection requests; their handling of network logs is separate from on-device OCR. This statement does not promise that infrastructure providers keep no logs.

Changes and contact

We will update this page when these practices change. For privacy questions, contact contact@textsnag.app.
